Super comfortable and great location! Not the biggest fan of open bathrooms but it was nice having lots of space. Staff are amazing, everyone is so kind, only downsides is no on-site parking, and breakfast can be slow but plenty of other cafes around and so close to the train station. We had an event at the rooftop and the events team made everything super simple, very professional, certainly recommend The Old Clare.

We stayed at The Old Clare to celebrate a birthday and it was truly special from start to finish. The team went above and beyond to make the experience memorable, including playing along with a surprise room upgrade for one of the nights and helping us with a late checkout while travelling with a toddler. The attention to detail was exceptional and every part of the stay felt considered, elegant, and effortlessly luxurious. The rooms were beautiful and breakfast was excellent. We stayed in both the Loft and Showroom Suite, each unique and memorable in its own right. This was our second stay at The Old Clare and once again we have nothing but wonderful things to say. We would highly recommend it

Some hotels impress you with scale. The Old Clare impresses you with character. Housed within a beautifully adapted collection of heritage buildings in Chippendale, The Old Clare manages a difficult balancing act: respecting its history while feeling entirely contemporary. Too often, heritage hotels lean heavily on nostalgia. Here, the past is celebrated without becoming a museum piece. The rooms are thoughtfully designed, generous in size and full of detail. Original brickwork, exposed structure and carefully considered furnishings create spaces that feel both sophisticated and comfortable. There is a confidence to the design that avoids unnecessary extravagance. What stands out most is the atmosphere. The Old Clare feels distinctly Sydney—creative, relaxed and slightly unconventional. The building’s industrial history remains visible throughout, giving the hotel a sense of authenticity that many luxury properties struggle to achieve. Service is polished without being formal. Staff are knowledgeable, approachable and attentive, striking the balance that good hospitality demands. You feel looked after without feeling managed. Its location places guests at the heart of one of Sydney’s most interesting urban precincts, surrounded by galleries, restaurants, bars and the energy of a neighbourhood that continues to evolve. Yet once inside, the hotel offers a welcome sense of retreat. The Old Clare succeeds because it understands that luxury is not about excess. It is about quality, attention to detail and a strong sense of place. This is a hotel with personality, confidence and substance—qualities that remain memorable long after checkout.

We booked this place on our way through Sydney returning home because it said it had some of the most comfortable beds in the city. I think they were right because the bed was insanely comfortable. It was our splurge for the trip and worth it Unfortunately, the rooftop bar was closed. Would I stay here again? 100%!

I received a complimentary room upgrade upon arrival, which initially gave me hope for a pleasant stay. Unfortunately, everything went downhill from there. The room was in unacceptable condition. The walls were visibly stained, the carpets had multiple marks, and the overall cleanliness was far below what any reputable hotel should offer — let alone one claiming to be 5-star. The hot water took an excessively long time to heat up, which is basic functionality that should not be an issue at this level. Housekeeping was consistently incompetent. On the first morning, I placed the cleaning sign on my door before leaving. When I returned at 3 PM, the room had not been touched. Only after calling reception was someone sent up — and even then, they replaced the towels with ones that had holes in them. This is completely unacceptable. The rooftop area was extremely outdated and poorly maintained. Stains were visible throughout the space, and dirty glasses were left sitting around for extended periods. The atmosphere felt neglected and unprofessional rather than luxurious. The minibar was never restocked during my stay, which again reflects a lack of basic service standards. On the second day, despite once again placing the housekeeping sign on the door, the room was still not cleaned by 4 PM. I had to contact reception yet again. The replacement towels that day were stained. Providing visibly dirty linens to guests is shocking and inexcusable. Room service operates only until 11 PM, and the food quality was mediocre at best — certainly not what one would expect from a hotel marketing itself as high-end. This property does not deserve a 5-star rating. In its current condition and with this level of service, it barely meets a 3-star standard. Extremely disappointing experience.
